Governance is an issue for the not-for-profit sector
There is no difference as to the value of good governance in any sector whether private, listed or not for profit (NFP) sector.
The additional risks in the NFP sector are that a large number of the members of Councils or Trustee Boards are offering their time either pro-bono or for little income. A number of council members in each organisation do not have business experience.
These two primary factors combined bring together a very diverse group of members with diverse agenda’s that, from experience we see, conflict very readily with the optimum running of the governing body.
External experience, insight and “putting up the mirror” objectively can add tremendous value to the governing body.
