Effectiveness checklist
The first rule of effective, diligent, comprehensive and transformational Board Evaluations is the same rule upon which the competitive edge of any company depends…
It is what drives a company and makes it stand out in its own market.
The rule is…
THERE ARE NO RULES
Indeed, this is the guiding principle of our bespoke approach at Genius Methods, tailoring the processes, frameworks and areas to the shape of the company.
We identify below a few issues you need to ask of your organisation and the Board members before choosing a methodology:-
- Is it robust? (This usually excludes the use of a spreadsheet).
- Is the information of evidential quality? (Also usually excludes the use of a spreadsheet).
- Is the process and content fit for purpose – does it relate to your organisation, in your industry, dealing with the issues most relevant to you?
- Does it offer continuity for all years in the three-year cycle, facilitated or not?
- Is it auditable?
- Can you easily access the data in subsequent years?
- Can you report and benchmark multiple periods, now and later?
- Do you have comparative reporting, year-on-year, irrespective of whether facilitated or not?
- Are the answers owned by organisation?
- Is it genuinely cost effective?
- Does it address relevant governance issues as well as changes in requirements over time – immediately?
- Is your methodology appropriate for each year?
- Are your responses attributed or genuinely non-attributed (not even viewed by a non Board member i.e. no-one in the organisation has access to the detailed answers)?
- Are you using a standard questionnaire that is not tailored to your needs?
- Does your process ensure that you address specific problem areas?
- Is the process user-friendly to the Board members?
- Are the responses captured in a secure electronic environment and available in the future?
- Do you have to re-capture information by an internal or external individual from manual sheets?
- Are your facilitators independent, do they have the right style, match of knowledge and empathy to address difficult issues?
- Are the same facilitators going to be available within the external organisation next year – this way change can be noticed and continuity provided?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?*
(From ‘The Satires of Juvenal’)
‘Who will guard the guards themselves?’; also sometimes translated as ‘Who watches the watchmen?’
A succinct encapsulation of the true spirit of corporate governance.
